A study in rats showed the potential of chlorella to counteract heavy metal poisoning in humans. Male rats were administered cadmium chloride, a compound of toxic metals used in photocopying and yellow dye. Some rats ate chlorella powder while the other rats were used as controls. Cadmium was found in the blood, liver, kidneys and small intestine of rats. However, there was a striking increase of cadmium in urine and feces of rats fed chlorella. In addition, damage to the tissues were lower in the group receiving chlorella. The research group concluded that chlorella can be considered a suitable counter-agent for heavy metal poisoning.
