Endocrinologists and nutritionists see it every day in their practices. After dieting, some patients maintain proper weight while others gain weight once again. Return to poor nutrition is not always behind the recovery of the lost kilos, say the experts, so, for some time, it indicates the existence of "other offenders". A Spanish research could have 'uncovered' this week.
According to their data, two hormones involved in appetite regulation and leptin -the grelina- have a key role to regain what had been thinned with low calorie diet.
"Knowing this can help identify those most likely to gain weight again and in the future, to design a customized program," explained Ana Belén ELMUNDO.es Crujeiras, researcher at the Center for Biomedical Research in Red-Physiopathology of obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) and lead author of the study.
His team, composed of researchers from the group of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, tracked 104 overweight or obese people who underwent a low calorie diet for eight weeks.
Among other factors, the researchers measured the plasma levels of ghrelin and leptin in the patients at the beginning of the investigation and the analysis repeated again six months later.
