Why do some recover lost kilos fast?

Endocrinologists and nutritionists see it every day in their practices. After dieting, some patients maintain proper weight while others gain weight once again. Return to poor nutrition is not always behind the recovery of the lost kilos, say the experts, so, for some time, it indicates the existence of "other offenders". A Spanish research could have 'uncovered' this week.

According to their data, two hormones involved in appetite regulation and leptin -the grelina- have a key role to regain what had been thinned with low calorie diet.

"Knowing this can help identify those most likely to gain weight again and in the future, to design a customized program," explained Ana Belén ELMUNDO.es Crujeiras, researcher at the Center for Biomedical Research in Red-Physiopathology of obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) and lead author of the study.

His team, composed of researchers from the group of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, tracked 104 overweight or obese people who underwent a low calorie diet for eight weeks.

Among other factors, the researchers measured the plasma levels of ghrelin and leptin in the patients at the beginning of the investigation and the analysis repeated again six months later.

Weight loss

Overall, participants lost an average of 5% of their body weight, although only a few were able to maintain this weight loss over time.

By crossing the data, the authors of this study published in the journal The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism ', found that those who had recovered more than 10% of what was lost after the diet had higher levels of leptin and figures more ghrelin lower than the rest of his colleagues both at the beginning and end of the study.

"These data indicate that, in certain patients, the action of these hormones is not correct," says Crujeiras.

Although unable to determine the mechanism that explains the relationship between these substances and regaining weight, your team is already working on a second phase of research to help unravel the keys of this partnership and progress in the search for specific treatments.

"The goal is to find therapeutic targets that help to restore proper hormone levels. If you know how people respond less well to treatment for overweight and can act against this bias, we can establish more personalized therapies," says the specialist, who emphasizes that this pathway is critical in the fight against the obesity epidemic plaguing the entire world.

"It's not only important to get people to not increase your weight. It is also essential to get those who have managed to lose weight will not return to recover the lost kilos," he concludes.
