Diet sodas ???

Ironically, people who seek care for your weight by consuming diet sodas may experience the opposite effect. A new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society shows a direct relationship between diet soda intake and increased abdominal obesity in adults over 65 years of age.

The alarming findings question the safety of consuming regular diet sodas, which not only increase the amount of fat in the belly but contribute to a greater likelihood of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome; a combination of risk factors that lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and stroke.

The WHO estimates that by 2014, 1.9 billion adults worldwide were overweight, of whom 600 million are obese. In an effort to combat obesity, many people try to reduce their sugar intake by substituting artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, or sucralose. However, as increased consumption of sweeteners, so has the prevalence of obesity.

A team of researchers led by Sharon Fowler, Center for Health Sciences at the University of Texas, in the United States, regularly measured height, weight, waist circumference and diet soda consumption of 149 people (Mexicans, Europeans and US), older than 65 years old, for over nine years. (Refreshments accelerate menstruation?)

They found that waist circumference increased almost threefold between people who drank diet soda regularly, compared with those who did not. Taking into account other potential factors, found that, during the time of study, waist increased on average .77cm volunteers who drank no soda in, in whom 1.76cm and 3.04cm occasionally consumed in those who were chronically. (Are diet sodas make you eat more?)
